When I Was a Mirage is a meditation on mirages and the elusive nature of the photographic image. Part image theory and part memoir, this book draws on mirages to think through the shifting terrains of trans embodiment, fugitivity, and visual culture. Taking a cue from 19th-century photographer Félix Nadar’s When I Was a Photographer, it moves between essays, fragments, and image theory, refusing capture or closure. A trans poetics of distortion and dislocation, When I Was a Mirage is not a story of arrival. It’s a record of vanishing points, soft refusals, and the queer poetics of the almost-seen.
